After a rough 0-2 start to the 2025 football season, the Fighting Saints football team has stormed back to a .500 record after four weeks of play.
The Saints began the season with a loss against last year's third best offense in the NAIA, Taylor University, which included allowing 42 points in the first half. They then travelled to Adrian, Michigan to face off against Sienna Heights University. After going into the fourth quarter with a lead, the Saints allowed two touchdowns and a field goal in the final ten and a half minutes in what ultimately ended up in a 24-21 loss.
One of the biggest questions the team had was their quarterback play. Outside of the 4th quarter, redshirt freshman Nathan Maul, who won the starting job in camp, had very little to show for in his first two starts. Carl Bew, who has lined up in multiple positions in the first four weeks, also took over under center in the opening game for two drives. Transfer Jonny Sorenson from Bowling Green University also has had his name thrown in the ring for playing time.
Regardless of this, head coach Joe Curry’s decision to stick with Maul has begun to pay off. The Saints have gone on to win their last two games, as the offense has put up a combined 108 points. Maul threw for 451 combined in the two games with five touchdown passes to only one interception, a stark contrast to his first two games of the season.
The Fighting Saints will take on Indiana Wesleyan away this Saturday at 11am in their final non-conference game. Fans can watch the game on Indiana Wesleyan’s website or listen on 88.7FM.
