Human Trafficking Awareness Lecture
By Rudy Flores

This week at USF the Criminal and Social Justice Department, along with the Career Success Center and the Criminal Social Justice Charter Club (CSJU) will be hosting a special guest lecture on human trafficking awareness. The lecture will be taking place on Wednesday, Oct. 22 at noon in the Sexton Auditorium, located in Tower Hall.

This event has been planned during Domestic Violence Awareness Month, something that the three collaborators took into account. Along with this, the event goes along with Alpha Phi Sigma’s, Criminal and Social Justice Department’s honors society, academic theme of the year, human trafficking.

While the event is held by these three clubs, they are bringing in the Cook County Sheriff’s Police Special Victims Unit to give the presentation. In addition to the officers who will be coming, a K9 will also be in attendance with the unit, with rumors that there will be a live demonstration with the dog as well.

One of the highlighting points both in flyers around campus and in emails sent out is that the event is open to all students, faculty and staff instead of being just limited to department and club members. The goal of allowing more people to come to the event according to CSJU President Cameron Sicinski is “to learn, support, and advocate for change.

So what can students expect to learn at the lecture? Sicinski highlighted this in her email to students and club members.

This session will provide valuable insights into the realities of human trafficking, its intersection with domestic violence, and the efforts being made locally to combat these crimes,” Sicinski said. “Attendees will gain a deeper understanding of the role of law enforcement in identifying and supporting victims, warning signs and risk factors, community resources and reporting mechanisms, and how we can all contribute as a community in prevention and awareness.”

Students are not required to sign up for the event and are encouraged to attend to learn more about Human Trafficking.
