The 68th GRAMMY Award nominations were announced for 2026. The GRAMMY’s are music based awards that are set to honor the best recording, composition and artists from that year. The GRAMMY Awards honor those who produced music between August 2024 and June 2025 at the awards show set for Feb. 1, 2026.
Winners of these awards are determined by the Recording Academy’s Voting Members which consists of a peer group composed of music creators, including artists, songwriters, producers, engineers and more. These members review every GRAMMY award nomination and vote for the winner. These winners are then announced on what is considered “Music’s Biggest Night” for anyone in the industry. This sets the stage for the precedent that the GRAMMY’s are music’s only industry recognized peer-voted honor.
This year marks history for the awards show as they are introducing two, brand-new, nomination categories. The new categories are Best Album Cover and Best Traditional Country Album. These additions further the Recording Academy’s commitment to recognizing a broader spectrum of artistic craft and honoring the evolving ways music is created and experienced.
While this signifies an exciting time for music production participants and enthusiasts, many sources are criticizing the Recording Academy for a seemingly disconnected understanding of what is current in pop culture. Many sources explain that the Best New Artist category is often the most exciting because it is such a foundational moment for anyone in the up and coming of their music career. This year, however, many of the nominees are only on their first music release. In years past there have been a wide mix of those who have attempted to establish a career and those who are just starting out, it is being expressed by many sources and spectators that there is discontent with many of the nominees that are up for this award.
Much like any award show, people are going to be unhappy with choices. While it can be understood where spectators and sources are feeling outraged, it can be inferred that with the refresh of awards comes refresh of the nominee decision process.
