The Christkindlmarket in Aurora has officially opened for the season on Thanksgiving night. Christkindlmarket is a German Christmas tradition that began in Medieval Germany as a way for people to stock up on food and other necessities before winter began. As the tradition spread, the market began to have more of a Christmas focus and housed specialty foods, gifts and festive vendors.
The Christkindlmarket in Chicago originally began in 1996 and spread to Aurora in 2022. Aurora hosts the Christkindlmarket in RiverEdge Park, located at 360 N Broadway, Aurora, IL 60505. The Christkindlmarket runs from Thanksgiving Day to Christmas Eve. The market is only open Thursday through Sunday, with the exception of December 22 through 24, when additional hours are available.
There are specialty events that take place on the days the Christkindlmarket is open, including ornament making, German wine tasting, specialty pop-up vendors and more. The Christkindlmarket is free to attend, but visitors will need to purchase tickets to the specialty events and purchase their own food and drink.
If you can’t make it to the location in Aurora, there is also a Christkindlmarket in Chicago, located at Daley Plaza, 50 W Washington St, Chicago, IL 60602, or you can attend the Christkindlmarket in Wrigleyville, located at Gallagher Way, 3635 N Clark St, Chicago, IL 60613. Both of the Chicago-based locations have operational hours throughout the week if you want to try to avoid the weekend crowds.
If you can’t make it to the Christkindlmarkets in person, there is also an opportunity to shop online with the vendors. Here is the link to shop online: https://www.christkindlmarket.com/online-vendors/
